Professional Experience

LEAD DIGITAL TECHNICAL WRITER

MSA Safety, Inc.

August 2021 – Present

  • Lead business-wide documentation sustainability project using an iterative predictive approach with a team spanning multiple cross-functional groups, resulting in savings of over $50,000 for 2022 and the annual elimination of six tons of plastic and paper waste.

  • Manage 4-5 small predictive documentation projects for new development products each year, including individual project scopes, schedules, budgets, stakeholder registers, quality management and control plans, and risk registers.

  • Leverage Agile principles and Lean process principles to hone the company’s manual publishing process and to align publication goals across the enterprise business system.

  • Collaborate with engineering, product safety, standards and compliance, and marketing teams via Jira and Confluence to gain detailed technical knowledge of products and manage risks to scope, schedule, cost, quality, and project resources.

  • Implement department-wide process improvement and efficiency initiatives to decrease administrative burden and improve  accessibility and transparency across functional groups, leading to the adoption of a digital asset manager for over 100 different products’ documentation. 

  • Author user-friendly online product manuals for newly designed products using MadCap Flare and MadCap Lingo software suite.

  • Support the creation and maintenance of outstanding supplemental content to leverage product user guides as  performance support tools for customers and employees, including graphics, video content, and translated manuals. 

  • Meet documentation goals and requirements to support product success throughout the project gate review process. 

  • Act as liaison for other cross functional teams interested in the adoption of MadCap software for documentation purposes across the business system. 

  • Mentor part-time technical writers for successful completion of publication support tasks.

INTERMEDIATE TECHNICAL WRITER

Fluor Marine Propulsion/Naval Nuclear Laboratory

April 2019 – August 2021

  • Led a large predictive project with a team of 10 technical writers across the organization to request the approval of digital delivery of all user manuals from the company’s federal oversight body, supporting the transition to digital formats, and resulting in the elimination of large-scale printed manuals.

  • Managed small waterfall projects to request government acceptance of new publication reporting and engineering work tracking requirements, managing the projects closely to guarantee scope, schedule, and continuity of quality as the engineering team transitioned to the new system.

  • Authored, edited, and published quarterly revisions of an interactive electronic technical manual (IETM)  containing approximately 320 individual content units and schematics for the operation of a fleet of nuclear  aircraft carriers. 

  • Coordinated with over 50 subject matter experts across 5 locations to document sensitive information for plant operation and maintenance with the highest quality documentation.

  • Verified engineering content approval and change request records to ensure consistency with documentation quality standards and federal requirements.

  • Enacted risk management plans when variances to quality or scope were identified, ensuring prompt remedy of issues.

  • Administrated a SQL database and implemented a content management system to track the status of  engineering work projects, meeting 100% of quarterly manual publication deadlines. 

  • Performed detailed software testing and provided user feedback to the software engineering team.

  • Trained engineers in XML authoring environment, work tracking database, and content management  system after onboarding.
